Oceania or Oceania is a geographic region composed of several groups of Pacific Ocean islands (Polynesia, Melanesia and Micronesia). The term Oceania was coined in 1831 by the French explorer Dumont d’Urville. The term is used today in many languages to denote a geographical and political region that comprises the continent of Australia and adjacent Pacific Ocean islands.
The boundaries of Oceania are defined in many ways. Most definitions recognize parts of Australasia as Australia, New Zealand and New Guinea, and part of the Malay Archipelago as being parts of Oceania.
